Into the North

A green Vuillard interior,
milkglass windows
from a quainter era;
early evening,
early spring--
my parents are invited out--high steppers--spatted Dad,
Mom in checkerboard satin--
(that big emerald on her finger
far from fake);
a little party
at the Rosenheimers,
burnt orange reflections
fire the walls--
partridge,
champagne--
Dad splashes the ladies
while Mom endures.
